Matt Hill aka the “Nightowl” himself managed to escape quietly into the desert at the Valley of Fire in Nevada with Gabriel Biderman and JC for some night photography during their recent trip to NAB

JC captured this creative portrait by the light of the nearly-full moon, and the rear LCD of Gabe's camera using a Nikon D4S.

Michael Ward's Last Shot: MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

by Colleen Carlisle-Nicholas       Category Fun, Giveaway, Night Photography       Tags giveaway, MeFOTO SideKick360, Instagram giveaway, iPhoneographer, Iphone adapter, smartphone adapter

Michael Ward, our second SideKick360 winner, has an interesting profession. He paints shoes.  Really! Working with a brush and painting freehand, Michael creates one-of-a-kind custom designs for each of his customers. He says people often come to him with ideas for their "Holy Grail" of shoes and it's his job to get that idea out of their heads and onto a pair of sneakers, dress shoes, pumps, etc.

Though most of what Michael photographs is his artwork, he took a break recently and hit the road for some photographic experimentation:

"I had bought a Canon S95, and decided to take it to Vegas to flex it's muscles and experiment with some settings I had studied, but never had the opportunity to use on a camera of my own. After a whole night of shooting Vegas signs, cars and casinos, it was time to call it a night. As we left the Mirage, I saw this gorgeous car in the parking lot. My friends were in a hurry, but I had to hold up the group to get one last shot. And here it is!" - Michael

Thomas Streiff’s Neon Cityscapes and Laser Fountains

Thomas Streiff was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is proud of it! Much of his photography showcases his hometown, including a couple of ultra colorful nighttime cityscapes we found on his flickr stream.

Thomas had an on-and-off interest in photography until recently when it became, he says, “an addiction, a passion of mine, a serious hobby and part-time business venture.” He often finds himself shooting for friends, but for fun and relaxation he goes for landscapes and cityscapes.

The photo above is of the view up the Allegheny River towards Pittsburgh and was actually the result of a weather impaired super moon shot. When the clouds rolled in, obscuring the sky, Thomas didn’t just give up and go home. Instead, he aimed his Nikon D700, mounted on his titanium MeFOTO RoadTrip tripod, downriver to capture this 7 shot HDR image of the city at blue hour.

This next one’s got lasers! As part of the Three River Arts Festival, the city was celebrating the reopening of the Point Park Fountain with a spectacular laser show. From the West End Overlook, Thomas set up his camera and tripod and caught this shot of the colorful lasers shooting up out of the top of the fountain. The MeFOTO performed admirably!”, he says. “It started to get a little breezy, and I had the center column of the tripod up. To prevent a little camera shake, I placed my bag strap on the hook of the tripod in the center column and it was rock solid. After coming home I adjusted the photos to my liking in Lightoom 5 and viola!”

To wrap up, here’re some words from Thomas on why photography is his passion:

I think the best thing about photography is to be able to tell your story. To capture a moment in time. To be able to go back and view and experience that special "slice of life", Whether it be a wedding, a birth, an event, a simple hug, a certain look, or just a majestic landscape. If you can recreate that lost time through photography, suck the viewer in, make them experience and feel that moment, you have achieved the nirvana of being a true photographer, not merely one who takes pictures. That is what I strive for.

I feel the strong NEED to take pictures. It is in my psyche. It is my soul. It transforms and shapes my stream of consciousness.
