Kirk Ragoonath's "Gator": MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

by MeFOTO Blog       Category Travel Photography, nature photography, Wildlife Photography       Tags American Alligator, Florida Everglades, MeFOTO Instagram Giveaway, Instagram giveaway

Stretching from just south of Orlando all the way to Florida Bay, the Florida Everglades is a tropical wetlands covering more than 734 square miles. Kirk Rangoonath, our SideKick360 winner for 11/14/14, has spent years capturing the beauty of this unique ecosystem.

"If you ever get to visit the Florida Everglades, the first thing you will probably notice is the abundance of American Alligators. I have taken quite a few alligator pics over the years, but I really liked how this image turned out with the lack of wind and low light conditions. I usually shoot in direct sunlight, so I really wasn't sure how the image would come out. In this case, it seems to have worked out well. Learning everyday with every shot! This image was taken in Big Cypress National Preserve on a beautiful late afternoon." - Kirk

Hassaan Rasheed's "Gone Fishin'": MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

If fishing is your passion, Lake Habeeb nestled at the foot of Evitts Mountain in the Allegany mountains of western Maryland, is a pleasant place to pursue it.

The clear, 234 acre lake supports an excellent large mouth bass population and a limited but still good small mouth bass fishery. Some large mouth bass caught here have weighed over 10 pounds! The lake is also stocked with brown and rainbow trout, as well as channel catfish. Native trophy sunfish, shiner, bullnose and other smaller species are plentiful.

Hassan Rasheed, our SideKick360 winner for 9/12/14, shot his winning image with a Nikon D610 and 18-35mm G lens at sunset while on a recent hiking trip.

Jenny Minutillo's "Soft Beauty": MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

by MeFOTO Blog       Category Macro Photography, nature photography, Giveaway       Tags MeFOTO Giveaway, instagram giveaway, Orchid photography, flower photography, white orchid

Orchids. With their graceful lines and amazing range of colors, they make interesting subjects for close-up and macro photography. Surprisingly, it doesn't take much in the way of gear to create a good orchid photo. The basics are as simple as your favorite orchid, your camera, a tripod, a strong light source and something large and white to bounce that light off. Check-out B&H's excellent post on Beginning Orchid Photography for a detailed "How to".

Jenny Minutillo, last week's SideKick360 winner, captured her winning image in the comfort of her own home:

"I was intrigued by the "whisker" on the orchid and tried varies angles to capture it. It just so happened the back drop was a dark brown table lamp, so the contrast brings out the beauty of the orchid." - Jenny

Jason Paul, our SideKick360 winner for 8/22/14, captured his winning image just outside of Tucson, AZ with his Nikon D3100. A bit of a philosopher, he shares his thoughts with us:

"This image to me resembles the long road in life, and that it keeps going; even with the problems we face in every day life (represented by the dark clouds).

'The Road is endless if you put your mind to it.'" - Jason

Sarah Groff's "Green": MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

Congratutlations to Sarah Groff, our SideKick360 winner for 8/15/14, who shares with us her story:

"This image is of a White's Tree Frog at the Louisville Zoo in Louisville, KY. It was taken on a field trip for a kids' camp that is run by the local chapter of the Student Academy of Audiology. The camp is for kids with hearing loss and their siblings.

I have always loved photography, but just recently upgraded to a DSLR in March. My passion for photography lies in shooting wildlife and pets. Animals convey such a true and natural form of beauty while displaying their own unique personality. I love being able to portray that in my images.

I took this shot using a Canon 60D with the 18-135mm kit lens. I used the trip to the zoo as an opportunity to work on shooting in manual mode. Shooting in manual has allowed me to get any shot that I want, including the one of this frog in a dimly lite environment." Sarah
