Latourell Falls is the closest of the Columbia Gorge waterfalls to Portland. Latourell with its 249' plunge is unique among the best-known Columbia Gorge waterfalls in that it drops straight down from an overhanging basalt cliff. Misty in summer, frozen in winter, the falls are beautiful in every season as 11/22/13s BackPacker winner, Spencer Goldie found on a recent trip.
"I was visiting Portland Oregon for the weekend and I heard that there was some awesome waterfalls about 45 minutes outside the city. My girlfriend and I love to explore so we drove out there and started hiking in the rain. We came across this first waterfall In the Columbia gorge area. This waterfall is the lower Latourell Falls. It was perfect that it was raining and overcast because it allowed me to close my aperture up to f/22 and get a 4 second exposure. This was my first time photographing waterfalls and it was an amazing experience. Even though we kept exploring and I photographed several other waterfalls that day, this one was my favorite because of the rocky river at the bottom and the awesome green patch of life on the rock wall next to the falls. I definitely would like to go back and see those waterfalls again and continue to find new ones." - Spencer
