Awesome car shots. Simple, right? Not necessarily. Snapping a straightforward image of a car may be simple, but capturing the design, details and "soul" of the car can be seriously challenging. Backgrounds, lighting, angles, and details are all elements to be considered in creating an epic image.

Jimmy Zou, our SideKick360 winner for 12/5, created this winning image during a photo shoot of this 1955 Buick Special for a friend.

Shot with a Nikon D3100 in RAW mode.

Thom Barbour's Little Costa: MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

by Colleen Carlisle-Nicholas       Category Bird Photography, Giveaway, Travel Photography       Tags SideKick360, MeFOTO Giveaway, Instagram giveaway, Costa hummingbird

For Thom Barbour, our May 9th SideKick360 winner, persistence pays off:

"Arizona has a very large hummingbird population. I planted specific flowers last summer and waited for blooms to attract the birds this spring. Shooting both in plain sight outside and through the window inside, it was hard to get a good image because the birds don't stay long and zoom around the flowers so quickly.

I originally started out freehand to allow a lot of movement, but found out quickly that a tripod was needed for stability. After mounting the camera to my MeFOTO BackPacker and practicing quick movements and focusing, I tried again to capture the birds with mixed results.

On the fifth day, I went outside to take a phone call and the birds didn't seem phased by me being right next to the flowers, so I went inside, grabbed the camera and fired off shots of this female Costa while still on the phone. Fortunately, the camera was already mounted on the tripod and I didn't lose any time framing or refocusing...seconds later she was gone. Just goes to show that after all of the planning, it pays off to remain flexible in the moment." - Thom

Blue Blubber, Leidy's Comb, Lion's Mane, Pacific Sea Nettle, Purple-Striped, Moon - what do all these have in common? They are the 9 varieties of jellyfish making up the "Jellies Invasion" exhibit currently on display in the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Jellyfish or sea jellies are found in every ocean, at every depth - currently over 1,700 species worldwide.

Linda Lum DeBono, SideKick360 winner for 4/18/14 was drawn to these captivating creatures on a recent family trip.

"When the kids and I visited the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD, I was obsessed with the jellyfish. They were graceful and mesmerizing, but my kids wanted to leave. I took out my iPhone 4 and snapped a few shots. Luckily, I got a few good ones. I did a little editing in Snapseed and added a frame."

Dominicka Jemmott's "In God We Trust": MeFOTO Instagram Weekly Winner

by Colleen Carlisle-Nicholas       Category Giveaway, Macro Photography, Fine art photography       Tags MeFOTO Giveaway, Instagram giveaway, still life photography, SideKick360

With digital photography, it's easy to experiment. Using trial and error, we can quickly shoot as a many images as it takes - often hundreds! - to walk away with with one or two winners.  Who won't love more winners though? Try Previsualization. Previsualization is the process of imagining your image and seeing that image in your mind's eye before you take the shot.

Dominicka Jemmott, this week's SideKick360 winner, used exactly this technique on her winning image:

"One day I decided that I wanted to see how far I could go by being creative with just my iPhone 5. And since I love fine art photography, I decided to gather a few old pennies that I found inside an old jar in my closet. After looking at these pennies, I immediately saw how I wanted to capture the image. So, I stacked about 10-15 pennies on my window frame with the blinds & window open, some facing upward and the rest facing downward. Then I began taking a few shots (about 3-5). I didn’t like the first three, but the fourth one was a charm. I wanted to give the image a micro type of feel, so I had to give the camera a little tilt and move closer to get my focus on the one coin you see most.

I edited my image in Snapseed. I went for an old dirty grudge, slight HDR feel because that was what I had envisioned. 95% of the time, before I take an image that I’m being creative on... I see it in my mind before I capture it. Then BOOM you have a winning shot!" - Dominicka
